I went in thinking it unusual for an adaptation to buck the more typical play-to-film route. It turns out lots of films turn into plays (if you don’t believe me, look here), and interestingly musicals are often the ones to do it. This production, directed by John Tiffany, uses Hansard and Irglova’s songs in a book written by Enda Walsh and boasts a cast of superb singers and musicians led by a convincingly brooding Steve Kazee and truly charming Cristin Milioti.

BABELGUM METROPOLIS ART PRIZE

Winners of the Art Video Competition Will Garner a Total of US $30,000 in Cash Awards and Have Their Videos Exhibited on New York City’s Times Square Monitors

Grand Prize Will Be Chosen by Jury Chaired by Isabella Rossellini
LONDON/ NEW YORK (September 28, 2009) – Babelgum , the independent web and mobile video content platform, continues its talent-scouting mission with the launch of the Babelgum Metropolis Art Prize, which seeks out art videos from the world’s best and edgiest artists. The competition is an open call to all artists active in any visual medium to submit videos of their works. Artists can direct the videos themselves, or bring in a filmmaker to direct. Entries will be evaluated by a jury of curators chaired by iconic art-house actress and video artist Isabella Rossellini, in addition to being voted upon by the Babelgum audience. Nine winners will have their videos broadcast on jumbo monitors in Times Square, turning New York City’s most spectacular space into an art installation site; three will also win cash prizes worth a total of US $30,000. The Prize is presented in association with SCOPE International Contemporary Art Show and Perpetual Art Machine.

Entries to the inaugural Babelgum Metropolis Art Prize are being accepted until October 18, 2009 at www.babelgum.com . Jurors and audiences will vote on the videos from November 2 through December 6, 2009. The special winner’s exhibition in Times Square will take place on December 17. Further information about submission specifications and regulations, including deadlines to submit, screen and vote, are available on the Babelgum website.

Metropolis publisher Laurence Billiet explains what they are looking for, “We’ve found that more and more artists are using video as a medium. Often it begins with a desire to document the ‘making-of’ their art - particularly when it is of ephemeral nature, such as graffiti or performance. But over time the video itself has become an extension of the artwork and it acts as a complementary or alternative form of self-expression. Once it’s uploaded online the video also allows the artist to reach a broader and more global audience, than say a specific gallery.”

“The Metropolis Art Prize is an invitation to artists to bring their art to life using video. And it is an opportunity to share their work and vision with a global audience. We are particularly interested in subjects and themes that explore and celebrate our urban environment in all its strange and wonderful permutations. The challenge, really, is for artists to think about interesting ways they can use video in conjunction with their work to create an exciting and entertaining experience”.

The Babelgum Metropolis Art Prize consists of the following awards:

The Metropolis Art Grand Prize: The winner will receive US $20,000, a dedicated artist channel on Babelgum Metropolis and will have his/her video screened on Times Square monitors.

The Best Street Art Video: The winner will receive US $5,000 and have his/her video screened on Times Square monitors. The Best Street Art Video will be selected by juror Cedar Lewisohn, curator of the 2008 Street Art exhibition at the Tate Modern gallery in London.

The Audience Award: The winner will receive US $5,000 and have his/her video screened on Times Square monitors. The Babelgum audience will vote for this award online and on mobile.

The Times Square Special Screening Awards: six runners-up (two from each prize category) will also have their videos screened on Times Square monitors.

Isabella Rossellini shared her enthusiasm about the competition: “We want to be inspired, challenged, excited, awed, moved, intrigued and weirded-out. Babelgum’s Metropolis channel explores and celebrates the city and the urban environment in all its gritty, strange and wonderful permutations. We’re looking for art that reflects this spirit.”
I received a link today to this 2006 televised performance of a piece by Merce Cunningham's long-time collaborator John Cage. I then learned of Cunningham's death and heard highlighted on Brian Lehrer's show Cunningham's process of not choreographing to music (music appeared in his pieces at dress rehearsal). So I thought this performance of 4'33 was an apt tribute, albeit unintentional. Cunningham was at the forefront of his craft and of the world of art to the end. His website,…

His website, www.merce.org broke ground by streaming webcasts of rehearsals; he planned for the disbanding of his company two years after his death, pre-settling artistic questions about how to carry on his work.
I just saw Tacita Dean's work at Marian Goodman up through April 29. Half the show is overpainted photographs. The larger ones are interesting: the ancient burial rocks silhouetted using black paint are striking; but the photo texture and paint didn't work for me (I became more interested in the brush strokes than the subject matter). On the other hand, the small paintings, using white gouache to silhouette and other marks on photos of trees, are gorgeous.
Her 16mm film Michael Hamburg, about the British poet, documents him in his home in Suffolk. The film is lush with soft images of trees and cropped compositions inside the house. While stacks of books and journals fill the house, most of the film -- and one assumes most of his life -- finds this man who escaped Nazism as a child talking about his apple orchard and the numerous unusual varieties he grows. The film, which is poignant and sweet like an apple, emerged from a commission about author W.G. Today, we visited Bytom's sole contemporary "gallery," which is funded by the city as part of the Cultural Center that houses the dance festival we've been enjoying. The gallery, Kronica, seems to operate on a theoretical level. Our host, Stach Ruksza, described the mission as bringing something of the "alien" to the Polish Silesian region. Whereas many other parts of Poland and Eastern Europe are experiencing an influx of "the outsider" through immigration (or have through history), Silesia is an area that thinks of itself in isolation from both Poland and Germany, which it used to be part of. Ruksza claims to be bringing the outsider into the culture in the form of art -- contemporary Polish art, which is as out of place in this traditional, isolated area as an immigrant population would be.

I said the gallery operates theoretically. By that, I mean that there is no audience for contemporary art in Bytom. The gallery pursues three "strategies" in developing it's activities: 1) a residency in which an artist takes over a large room in the gallery and creates what he will; 2) exhibitions in the main space; and 3) Looking for opportunities to make public political moves that bring media or legal attention. (The best example so far was showing a work in which the Pope held Elton John's decapitated head. That show led to a lawsuit, which the gallery won.)

The gallery hopes to create a network opportunity for other contemporary performing and visual arts organizations who are similarly working in out-of-the-way locations throughout Central and Eastern Europe, perhaps through a conference or other joint activity. For now, Kronica remains connected by showing top artists from the region and creating interesting publications and catalogs.

I will try to obtain names of artists for the work in the current exhibit, which we went through very quickly. The current exhibition, Unnatural History, curated by Sebastian Cichocki and Ruksza, tackles the problems of Silesia recovering from its past industrialization. It includes classic Polish art from the Soviet era, transitional contemporary art, such as a 1956 photograph of a coal miner with his shovel boldly held up in front of his face. (The photo was a flaunting of the social realist style which only showed workers optimistic and cooperative.) Other works are contemporary, including a lightbox photograph of six miners with their helmet lights on. Each light shines overly brightly with the backlighting and together create the Big Dipper constellation which stands out of the photo. The centerpiece of the exhibition is an imposing machine, approximately 20 ft (6m) long made of motors and piping. The machine positions a blade over a flattened pile of sand, and through a set of antique iron switches and joy stick gives the observer the opportunity to draw something in the sand (Sand Drawing Machine, Adam Garnek). The piece very cleverly captures the notion of much ado about nothing and serves as a perfect metaphor for industrialization making a huge impact without lasting benefits.Dance Festival, Bytom Polandtag:artistsunite.ning.com,2008-06-30:2048539:BlogPost:26242008-06-30T22:12:17.000ZPeter Ferkohttps://artistsunite.ning.com/profile/BetaTester

* We have run this announcement several times and have connected with some extraordinary storytellers. There are so
many responses; unfortunately, we are not able to respond to everyone who is interested. We apologize for this. If we do
not return your call or email, it means we have selected someone already. We fill the slot as quickly as possible.

* The times and the fee for the presentation is set. If your fee is higher, we understand, but we cannot afford you at this
time. Please do not call to negotiate for a higher rate or schedule change.

* We are looking for artists who have done this before, are flexible, and can capture and hold the attention of a small
audience with ease. Please do not call if you just want to give storytelling a try, because you "think" you can do it or you
will be reading folktales from a book.
